Discovery Park

Just a few pics from my trip to Discovery Park on Saturday. Discovery is a Seattle's largest public park and a former military base (the local reservists still have their HQ adjacent to the park). The park has plenty of trails to explore, many eventually leading down to the shore overlooking the Sound. It was a popular spot with dog walkers and day strollers but wasn't so busy as to feel like a Lakeland honeypot. My guide book had suggested wildlife including bald eagles inhabit the park, but there was little to see unfortunately.

^ This tree was shrouded in cobwebs which had retained the morning dew giving it this splendid sheen.

The picturesque South Beach proved to be the perfect place to bask in the hazy sun and read a little more of my book.

A quaint lighthouse (currently being restored) and a couple of derelict lighthouse keepers clapboard cottages sit on top of the head land overlooking the North and South beaches.

At the point the two different bodies of water meet creating this odd pattern of wave collisions and unusual eddies and currents.

There seems to be a tradition of building these driftwood structures, almost like shelters though offering little in the way of protection from the elements. There were serveral dotted along the shoreline just above the high tide mark, an a few young boys were building another while I was there.

A group of sea kayakers were returning to the beach. Many people own their own kayaks and paddle boarding through the canals linking Lake Washington to the Sound is popular also (I'll try get a photo some time, its an odd sight!).
I went to Seattle Center and the Space Needle today so there's a whole bunch of pictures from that but I need to sort through them first. I have less two weeks left in Seattle but still so much left to do: complete my lead climbing course, visit the Olympic sculpture park, Lab dinner party, finish my research and visit the first ever Starbucks (clearly the most important!).
