Day 13 - Light up the world

A few pictures of the art installation currently outside the Senate House. It was quite tricky to bring out on a phone camera at night but I did my best...

Day 11

I like Saturdays, a big reason for this is brunch. Brunch is great, lets face it, it's a politer way of saying all day breakfast so what's not to like? And when you're eating it in King's beautiful hall then it's even nicer. I washed brunch down with a little light shopping, picking up some warm layers for cycling in.
Continuing my attempt for increased exercise (downgraded to 5 days out of 7 for sheer pragmatism) a gym session combined with watching the Wales vs. Italy rugby followed. A quick viewing of a potential house for next year (watch this space) was followed by the England vs France game.
An old friend, Mike, was in Cambridge for the night so joined Joe and me for steak (and a nice bottle of red, thanks Mike!). A few drinks in town afterwards and a relaxing Saturday was over.

Day 6 Halfway!

So I'm finally properly halfway through my time at university. It's sort of scary that I have the same to come again, especially when I think about everything that I have done in the last four and a half years!
Anyway Joe, Charlie, Petros and I went out to a new steak restaurant, Cau, on Bene't street to celebrate. It was a good eat, reasonably priced food though a bit dear for drinks. They do the annoying thing of adding a "discretionary service charge" to your bill, I'm sorry but this is not the US we tip based on quality of service not obligation.

Day 5 - A Beautiful Day to Bicycle

Woke up to a wonderfully bright and fresh spring day-come-early this morning. Joe was keen for a long turn out on the bikes but I was tight for time (a story for another day) so I just spun down the guided busway towards Trumpington park and ride, followed by a little exploring past the new LMB (2.0, funded by humanised chimeric monoclonal antibodies) and past cycle route 11 which leads towards hinxton (which will be the destination for another ride). Pictures below.

Day 4 - Lunch in London

Met my family in Covent Garden for lunch at a lovely little place called Opera Tavern on St Catherine's Street. Had a deliciously sweet and coffee-y Pedro Ximenez sherry which complemented a fantastic menu include Iberian pig ears, wild sea bass and three types of manchego. Delicious!
Ps. I think this bridge between buildings is fantastic and reminiscent of MC Escher.

Day 3 - Taking in the sun

Found this little fellow while grabbing a desperate 15 minutes of daylight on Friday. (It turns out lab life does not lend itself to seeing the sun, especially in winter!)

Day 1 Ash Wednesday

A couple of photos of my youth (thought I should start at the beginning)

This is the (ex-work)house where I was born (ground floor room on the left, since you ask...)

This was how my room was decorated when I was young - fed my imagination, thanks mum!

40 Days of Me

Ok so I'm not really one for giving things up for Lent, I think denying myself things I enjoy, mostly just for the sake of it is a bit daft. This year however I'm feeling well disposed to making a few improvements to my life, by aiming to do them every day (ok 6 days in 7) I hope to form habits which will outlive these 40 days. And to help harness this new found enthusiasm I've even started on Day 0, ie Shrove Tuesday.
So what are my changes? So far there's:
More exercise! I realise this is probably not that uncommon but I've wanted to get fitter for a while, and even signed up to Fenner's, the university gym back in January. So I've decided to make it happen - at the very minimum a short gym session 6 days a week, mostly cardio at first, though an alternative proper episode of exercise will also count. Today it was half an hour or so in the gym, on Sunday Joe and I are planning to join a group cycle ride, so I just have to get in some more gym sessions between now and then!
More Blogging! Oh look, I'm already doing it. At the very least you'll get some photos each day (I hope I have enough in the bank if I don't feel particularly camera happy). Expect whatever random tosh I can conjour up each day.

That's enough for now, don't want to drain all my enthusiasm on the first day!
