Asian Adventure (Part XI)

After our return to Hanoi we were off to China, riding the night train in great comfort. We arrived in a very rainy Nanning, after a passable, if disturbed night's sleep. The differences were stark: Nanning resembles a Western city, a world apart from the Asian madhouses of Hanoi, Saigon, Phnom Penh and Bangkok; but no-one spoke a word of English (thank goodness Wis can speak Mandarin, even if we were in Cantonese Southern China). To be brutally honest we didn't really give Nanning a chance, the weather was so crumby and there is little touristy to do there so we quickly bought bus tickets to Guangzhou. The bus was a surprise: it had bunk-beds not seats (think knight bus but without the shapeshifting or the beds moving...). The kindle came into its own, letting us book a hostel from the bus (thank you for the free internets Amazon!) but we still ended up wandering the dark streets of Guangzhou in our efforts to find the hostel (cunningly hidden in a back street...). We spent a couple of days enjoying all Guangzhou had to offer, see photos:
