Asian Adventure (Part X) Halong Bay

The place all the guide books said to visit, Halong Bay, is frankly stunning. We took a three day two night cruise around the bay, and while the boat and the 'attractions' weren't all that great, the time we spent  on the sun deck watching the bay go by and lounging on the beach was fantastic. Another highlight was diving off the top of the boat to swim in the sea, unfortunately that little escapade led to a small adventure. A couple of the passengers were stung by a jellyfish while swimming in the sea, one of them developed a severe reaction and was soon struggling to breath. It soon became clear that Wis and I were the only people on board with any form of medical training, but being fresh out of pre-clinical we were definitely out of our depth. Despite this, we ended up taking command of the situation, after forcing the crew to actually call an evacuation rather than ineffectually rub lime on her arm, I ended up calling my dad who indulged in a little bit of transglobal consultation. We managed to dredge up an inhaler which eased her condition a bit. Eventually the calvary arrived, except in this case the calvary was an unlit speedboat, before we knew, Fred and I, along with the unwell passenger and her partner were flying across the waves back to the port with only the moonlighting the way. Soon enough we were in the hospital, an hour or two and a dose of IV steroids later and my 'patient' was well again. She and her partner elected to stay on the mainland; excitement over Fred, our guide and I took the slow boat back to our cruise boat for a well earned beer and some dinner!
